Rabat – Morocco and India have taken significant steps towards enhancing their economic and technological collaboration, as unveiled during the 7th session of the Morocco-India Joint Commission held in Rabat on Monday. This meeting focused on setting concrete trade objectives and establishing a new partnership in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure.
Indian Minister of Commerce, Industry, Electronics, and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, proposed an ambitious plan to double the bilateral trade volume from approximately $4 billion to around $8 billion within the next five years. By the fiscal year 2025-2026, Indian exports to Morocco are projected to reach nearly $1.6 billion, whereas Morocco is expected to export goods worth approximately $2.89 billion to India.
Moroccan Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Omar Hejira, highlighted Morocco's strategic geographical location and existing free trade agreements that provide Indian companies access to both African and European markets. To achieve these trade goals, Prasada suggested the formation of a joint working group to explore the possibility of a preferential trade agreement. The discussions also encompassed expanding partnerships in the fertilizer sector, as well as collaborations in the automotive industry, electrical engineering, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects across road, rail, and water sectors.
Both nations have been cooperating in the defense sector for some time now, with Indian conglomerate Tata set to manufacture armored vehicles for Morocco, partly within the North African kingdom itself.
In a separate round of negotiations, Prasada and Moroccan Minister for Digital Transformation and Administrative Reform, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, agreed on establishing a joint commission focused on languages and digital technologies. A primary objective will be to integrate the Darija dialect and the Amazigh language into the state administrative portal Idarati (idarati.ma) through the "Al-Jazari Institute," thereby facilitating citizen interaction with government authorities. India brings valuable technological expertise to the table, boasting digital applications supporting 28 languages. This meeting built upon discussions held in February 2026 during the "AI Impact Summit" in New Delhi.
In May 2026, MAGHREB-POST reported on the evolving relationship between the two nations. As a next concrete step, the Indian side has invited a Moroccan delegation to the Partnership Summit 2026, scheduled to take place on November 12 and 13 in Visakhapatnam.
