Morocco Successfully Contained Desert Locust Outbreak, Says FAO

Morocco's Effective Measures Against Desert Locusts In a significant development for agriculture and food security in the region, Morocco's proactive measures against the desert locust outbreak have proven effective, as confirmed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO's recent Desert Locust Bulletin, published on July 7, 2026, highlights that Moroccan authorities have treated over 87,000 hectares in June alone, successfully managing one of the most severe locust outbreaks in Northwest Africa. This aggressive campaign not only mitigated the immediate threat posed by these pests but also prevented a wider regional infestation that could have had devastating implications for food production. Regional Impacts and Future Concerns The FAO has identified Morocco as the primary hotspot for locust activities in the region, where substantial populations of immature adult locusts had developed following the spring breeding season. By the end of June, many of these locusts had matured into flying adults, raising alarms about the potential formation of swarms. However, thanks to Morocco's comprehensive control operations, which accounted for nearly all locust-management efforts in the region last month, the immediate agricultural impact has been limited. While the FAO cautions that some adult groups might still coalesce into small swarms, a significant number of locusts are anticipated to migrate southward to Mauritania and the broader Sahel region, where conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for breeding. Interestingly, neighboring Mauritania reported only isolated instances of adult locusts during June, with minimal control efforts undertaken, treating just 68 hectares. This stark contrast underscores the effectiveness of Morocco's surveillance and intervention strategies, which have played a crucial role in curbing the escalation of locust populations. As the situation develops, continuous monitoring and intervention will be essential to prevent further outbreaks and protect regional agricultural livelihoods. As reported by northafricapost.com.
