Ecuador Voices Strong Support for Moroccan Sahara Autonomy Amid UN Resolution Adoption

Ecuador has officially expressed its endorsement of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which underscores that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most viable solution to resolve the long-standing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This significant declaration was made during a joint communiqué on April 17, 2026, following discussions between Ecuador's Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld and Morocco's Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Rabat. Ecuador's commitment to this resolution aligns with its broader foreign policy goals and reflects a robust stance on regional stability.

During the talks, the Ecuadorian government reiterated its support for Morocco's autonomy initiative, which was first introduced in April 2007. They described this plan as the only serious, credible, and realistic approach to end the regional conflict concerning the Moroccan Sahara. In addition to backing Morocco's sovereignty claims, Ecuador has also decided to expand its consular services to include the Moroccan Sahara, a move that highlights its recognition of the territory's status in accordance with international law.

Furthermore, both nations have affirmed their backing for the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, and his ongoing efforts to facilitate a political dialogue aimed at achieving a lasting resolution to the dispute. This collaboration signifies a mutual commitment to fostering peace and stability in the region.

In a bid to enhance economic ties, Ecuador has indicated its eagerness to explore opportunities for trade and economic cooperation within the Moroccan Sahara. This initiative is expected to open new avenues for investment and productive development, thereby benefiting both countries economically and reinforcing their bilateral relations. To further this objective, the Ecuadorian ambassador to Morocco is scheduled to visit the Sahara region soon, with the intent to prepare and support various economic initiatives that promise to yield fruitful outcomes.
