Three Senegalese Supporters Released in Morocco; Royal Pardon Sought for Remaining Fifteen

Release of Senegalese Supporters and Ongoing Legal Efforts

In a significant development, three Senegalese supporters who had been imprisoned in Morocco since the violent incidents surrounding the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) were released on April 18, 2026, after completing their three-month prison sentences. These individuals were among a group of eighteen supporters detained following the chaos that erupted during the January match between Senegal and Morocco. Their release was celebrated as they emerged from the Al Arjat 2 facility near Rabat, greeted by members of the Senegalese embassy. One supporter expressed gratitude, exclaiming "dima Maroc, dima Maghrib," which translates to "long live Morocco" in Moroccan dialect.

The three supporters were convicted of hooliganism, a charge that encompassed acts of violence towards law enforcement, vandalism of sports equipment, field invasions, and projectile throwing. Additionally, a French national of Algerian descent was also released on the same day after serving time for throwing a water bottle during the final.

Royal Pardon Requested for Others Still Imprisoned

While the release of the three supporters is a positive milestone, fifteen others remain incarcerated, facing sentences ranging from six months to one year. Their legal representative, Attorney Patrick Kabou, announced plans to submit a royal pardon request to the Moroccan royal cabinet shortly after the release of the three supporters. Kabou expressed that the release of the three was not a complete relief, as they "should not have been imprisoned in the first place." He emphasized that the remaining supporters do not harbor any grievances against the Moroccan kingdom, and they are hopeful of a favorable outcome regarding their pending pardon.

Currently, the recently released supporters are receiving psychological support and assistance in reconnecting with their families and returning to normal life. The legal team is actively pursuing the pardon, as the supporters believe they were wrongly treated during their detainment.
