Ecuador Endorses Morocco's Autonomy Initiative for Sahara Region

Ecuador's Strong Support for Moroccan Autonomy

On Friday, the Republic of Ecuador reiterated its endorsement of Morocco's autonomy proposal, originally presented in 2007, characterizing it as the sole serious, credible, and realistic solution to the longstanding regional conflict over the Moroccan Sahara. This affirmation was made in a Joint Communiqué issued in Rabat, following discussions between Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Ecuador's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, who is currently on a working visit to Morocco.

Ecuador has also expressed its approval of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which underscores that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty remains the most viable means to resolve the ongoing regional dispute effectively. Additionally, both nations reaffirmed their support for the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General dedicated to the Sahara, along with the ongoing efforts aimed at advancing the political dialogue necessary for a comprehensive resolution to the conflict.

Expanding Diplomatic and Economic Ties

The Joint Communiqué emphasizes Ecuador's decision to enhance its consular presence in the Moroccan Sahara, aligning with international law standards. Furthermore, Ecuador has expressed a keen interest in fostering economic and trade cooperation within the Moroccan Sahara, aiming to unlock promising opportunities for its economic sectors and to enhance connectivity with the African continent regarding investment, trade, and productive development initiatives.

In a significant move, the Ecuadorian minister announced plans for Ecuador’s ambassador in Rabat to visit the Sahara region shortly, with the objective of preparing and facilitating several economic initiatives. This visit is expected to pave the way for increased collaboration and mutual economic benefits between the two countries.
