Commemorating the Tenth Anniversary of the Historic Marrakech Declaration

Celebrating a Milestone with Global Recognition

In a grand international ceremony attended by prominent figures, the tenth anniversary of the Marrakech Declaration was celebrated, marking a significant milestone in the dialogue surrounding religious freedom. The event was graced by the presence of three former U.S. ambassadors who served as the U.S. Special Envoy for International Religious Freedom, highlighting the ongoing commitment to the principles set forth in the Marrakech Declaration by successive American administrations. The ceremony featured a series of speeches and discussions that reflected on the intellectual, institutional, and practical impact of the declaration over the past decade. Notably, several individuals who have contributed to promoting its principles were honored, emphasizing their roles in advancing initiatives related to citizenship, coexistence, and religious freedom.

During his address, His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah, President of the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace, emphasized that the commemoration of this ten-year milestone serves a dual purpose: it is both a celebration and a moment for critical evaluation. He reminisced about the 2016 gathering in Marrakech, where more than 250 scholars, thinkers, and religious leaders from diverse backgrounds convened to discuss the significance of the declaration. His Excellency elaborated on the declaration’s foundation in prophetic traditions, specifically referencing the "Constitution of Medina," which underscores the principle that inclusive citizenship is essential for the cohesion of contemporary Muslim societies. He articulated that safeguarding the rights of religious minorities is a fundamental tenet rooted in the Islamic faith and its core values, while also acknowledging the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, under whose auspices the founding conference was held.

Moreover, His Excellency praised the steadfast support from the United Arab Emirates, which has been instrumental in translating the declaration from theoretical frameworks into impactful programs. He noted that today’s celebration serves as a reminder that without the unwavering support from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and the continued guidance from His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the progress made would not have been possible.
