Disparities in Death Toll Following Ceuta Tragedy
The recent migrant crisis at the Ceuta border has led to a shocking disparity in reported fatalities between Morocco and Spain. Morocco has officially acknowledged the deaths of 11 migrants on its territory, whereas Spanish authorities have recorded at least 72 deaths in the same incident. This tragic event, which unfolded near the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, has raised alarm among various NGOs, who assert that the actual number of casualties may be significantly higher than reported, with many individuals still unaccounted for.
According to Moroccan officials, the deaths included ten individuals who drowned, along with one additional casualty who fell onto rocky terrain between Fnideq and the Spanish enclave. The Moroccan Interior Ministry has stated that it is working in collaboration with Spanish authorities to establish an accurate account of the victims and identify the bodies recovered from both sides of the border.
Escalating Migrant Numbers and Calls for Investigation
The Moroccan government has attributed this surge in migration attempts to the spread of misinformation on social media, alongside misinterpretations of a recent Spanish court ruling regarding maritime arrivals. They claim there have been nearly 40,000 attempts to illegally cross into Ceuta and over 1,100 attempts to reach Melilla, with many migrants being immediately turned back. On the Spanish side, more than 50,000 individuals attempted to enter Ceuta within a few days, marking one of the largest migration surges ever recorded in this area. This overwhelming influx resulted in over a thousand people requiring medical assistance, and rescue teams are still recovering bodies from the sea.
However, NGOs are disputing the official figures, with the Moroccan Association for Human Rights estimating nearly 130 victims and numerous missing individuals. In response to these claims, the Moroccan authorities have announced the initiation of judicial investigations, while Spain has intensified its security measures at the border to manage the ongoing crisis.
