The Inspiring Journey of Selu: A Legend in Endurance Cycling

Selu: A Beacon of Resilience in Endurance Cycling

At the age of 42, José Luis Gómez Miranda, affectionately known as Selu, has carved a remarkable niche in the world of endurance cycling, particularly in the deserts of Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Originating from El Burgo de Osma, Selu began his athletic journey dabbling in various sports before discovering his true passion for cycling, which has since transformed him into a legendary figure in this demanding discipline. Although not fixated on becoming the cyclist with the most participations in events like the Titan Desert, he remains undeterred by the challenge that looms ahead.

Selu is undoubtedly one of the most resilient athletes from the province of Soria. With an impressive record of participating in 26 Titan Deserts, which are widely regarded as some of the toughest endurance tests in the international cycling arena, he has demonstrated extraordinary stamina and determination. Each edition consists of six grueling stages, with distances reaching up to 130 kilometers, where competitors face extreme temperature fluctuations, sometimes swinging from a scorching 48 degrees Celsius during the day to bone-chilling two degrees at night in mountainous areas. Selu notes, “I have experienced temperatures soaring to 48 degrees in the sand dunes, and then plummeting to two degrees at night in the mountains. However, after extensive training, these temperatures no longer pose a challenge for me.”

A Passion for Adventure and the Journey Ahead

The Titan Desert events are structured into various categories that require participants to navigate through five mandatory checkpoints within each stage. The expertise of the cyclists is crucial; those who can shorten their route effectively receive significant bonuses that can enhance their standings. Despite the lack of luxuries—where participants often sleep in tents “in the middle of nowhere”—these events captivate many, including Selu, who competes in the 'adventure' category. This particular discipline entails racing without mechanical support or physiotherapy, and even necessitates sleeping on mats, amplifying the challenge.

Selu's introduction to the Titan Desert came through a newspaper article describing it as “the Dakar for bikes” just before his inaugural participation in 2010. It was at that moment he realized he had to embrace this experience. Stepping into the unknown, he arrived in Africa determined to conquer his fears. Although the initial stages posed significant hurdles, prompting him to contemplate returning home due to the intensity of his struggles, he persevered and finished in 137th place overall, celebrating this as a significant triumph.

Since that first success, Selu has continued to participate, and he now ranks as the third cyclist with the most Titan Desert completions in history, trailing just four behind the record holder. While he does not obsess over surpassing that record, he focuses on the enjoyment he has derived from his experiences as an amateur, professional, and adventure cyclist, setting his sights on winning the next edition. Despite the daunting nature of this goal, Selu is resolute in his pursuit of dreams, bolstered by a commendable track record that includes seven trophies in the adventure category and three victories in professional categories, alongside two second-place finishes and two thirds. “The results are great, but what truly satisfies me is having finished every edition,” he asserts.

To ensure he arrives in peak condition for the upcoming event at the end of April, Selu diligently balances his professional commitments with his passion for cycling, often utilizing his weekends for training. In addition to rigorous preparations across the scenic Sorian mountains, he engages in extensive efforts to secure sponsorships, which are crucial to covering the escalating costs of participation, which, as he notes, “becomes more expensive each year.” He expresses immense gratitude towards his sponsors who have supported him since his debut, emphasizing that their unwavering support has been instrumental in his journey.

Equally, Selu acknowledges the vital role his family and friends have played throughout the years, recognizing their understanding of the importance of the race even if they were unaware of its magnitude. His family's influence sparked his initial interest in cycling; as a child, he began riding to follow in his siblings' footsteps. Despite trying his hand at other sports like athletics and duathlon, he ultimately committed to mountain biking at the age of 17. Balancing studies, work, and training, he started competing in various races, inspired by the adrenaline that kept him engaged in the sport despite the initial nerves and challenges.

Today, Selu continues to compete around 30 to 40 days annually and serves as the manager for the provincial team, 'Soria Ni Te La Imaginas.' His role involves scouting for new talent, with the overarching goal of promoting the region's routes and natural beauty. “Our primary objective is to showcase our landscapes and culture,” he explains, embodying the spirit of resilience and dedication that defines his journey as a cyclist.
