Algeria-Nigeria Gas Pipeline: A More Promising Venture than Morocco's Project

The Algeria-Nigeria gas pipeline is emerging as a more appealing project compared to the similar initiative proposed by Morocco, according to insights from Geoff D. Porter, the Director of North Africa Risk Consulting (NARCO). In light of the recent turmoil in the global energy sector sparked by the Iran war, Porter emphasized the advantages of Algeria’s Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project during a recent interview with the Attaqa platform. He pointed out that the Algerian pipeline, which will connect Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria, stands out due to its shorter length, reduced technical complexity, and reliance on pre-existing infrastructure.

In stark contrast, the pipeline project championed by Morocco faces numerous challenges. Porter described the Moroccan initiative as not only expensive but also laden with technical complications, as it traverses multiple regulatory frameworks, making its feasibility increasingly questionable. Furthermore, he noted that regional dynamics have shifted, with Senegal, once a key player in the Moroccan gas project, now appearing less supportive due to recent tensions in their bilateral relations.

The Trans-Saharan gas pipeline is set to become the largest of its kind in Africa and is anticipated to commence operations soon, following directives from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This ambitious project aims to transport between 20 and 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Nigeria to Europe, utilizing routes through Niger and Algeria. Algeria's commitment to this project underscores its goal of enhancing energy integration within Africa, fostering economic development among participating nations, and facilitating access for African gas to European markets, all while leveraging the country's sophisticated infrastructure. Spanning an impressive length of 4,128 kilometers, the initial construction of the pipeline will be managed by Algeria’s national company, Sonatrach, particularly in the Nigerien territory.
