Important Announcement: Senegal vs Morocco Hooliganism Case

Release of Senegalese Supporters After Hooliganism Charges

Three months after being sentenced for "hooliganism" during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) final between Senegal and Morocco, three Senegalese supporters were released from prison this past Saturday. The match, which took place on January 18, culminated in Morocco's victory over Senegal, but the aftermath has been fraught with controversy. Initially claimed by the Lions of Teranga, the trophy was eventually awarded to the Lions of the Atlas two months later following a decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The final witnessed significant disturbances, leading to confirmed prison sentences for several supporters involved in the unrest.

According to reports from L’Équipe, the three supporters who were released had been serving a three-month prison sentence for acts of "hooliganism" related to the match. They were detained in a Moroccan prison and convicted of various offenses including violence, particularly against law enforcement, damaging sports equipment, invading the pitch, and throwing projectiles. Although they are now free, it is important to note that they were not the only ones affected; fifteen other supporters are still imprisoned, facing sentences ranging from six months to one year.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Following their release, the legal proceedings continue as the accused had their sentences upheld during an appeal hearing on Monday. The prosecution sought to increase their sentences, which sparked outrage from the defense. During the hearing, the defense argued that those who had entered the field did so due to a crowd surge, emphasizing that the individuals truly responsible for the chaos were in Senegal and not present during the court proceedings. Meanwhile, the final decision regarding the trophy's rightful owner remains undecided. Although Morocco has been declared the winner by default (0-3), the Senegalese Football Federation has escalated the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS).
