Strengthening Economic Cooperation Between Morocco and Ghana
On July 21, 2026, Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, engaged in significant bilateral discussions with Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. This meeting took place during the second session of the Ghana-Morocco Joint Cooperation Committee, which the two ministers co-chaired. The dialogue was aimed at enhancing the collaborative framework between the two nations, focusing primarily on economic and investment cooperation.
During their discussions, both ministers reflected on the advancements in bilateral relations since the historic visit of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to Ghana back in February 2017. They expressed satisfaction with the progress made, particularly noting the increasing presence of Moroccan enterprises in Ghana, especially in the banking, housing, and infrastructure sectors. Encouragingly, they also emphasized the necessity for boosting Ghanaian investments in Morocco, recognizing the reciprocal benefits these investments could yield. The ministers acknowledged the potential for strengthening investment flows between the two countries and highlighted the importance of developing public-private partnerships, particularly in emerging sectors such as green energy, logistics, and the digital economy.
In a commitment to fostering deeper collaboration, Bourita and Ablakwa agreed on the need to expand their cooperative efforts to include additional sectors, which encompasses industry, hydrocarbons, mining, energy efficiency, customs administration, postal services, and agriculture. They also recognized the untapped trade potential that exists between Ghana and Morocco. To capitalize on this potential, they agreed to initiate various measures such as economic missions, business-to-business (B2B) meetings, trade fairs, and exhibitions aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and improving the trade balance.
To further solidify the economic relationship, the ministers proposed the regular organization of a Ghana-Morocco Economic and Investment Forum, driven by the private sector, to be hosted alternately between the two nations. This initiative is expected to pave the way for more substantial economic engagement and investment opportunities, marking a new chapter in the collaborative journey of Morocco and Ghana.
