Robles Criticizes Morocco Amid Migrant Crisis
Margarita Robles, the Spanish Minister of Defense, has notably diverged from the government’s established narrative regarding the ongoing migrant crisis in Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city bordering Morocco. In a recent statement, Robles placed significant blame on Morocco for the unprecedented influx of migrants, which has seen tens of thousands crossing the border into Ceuta in recent days. "Ceuta and Melilla should not be targets. I urge the Moroccan government to adopt the same stance. It is unacceptable to exploit minors or throw people into life-threatening situations as a result of actions taken online," Robles declared during a press conference in Zaragoza.
Robles emphasized that those responsible for this crisis, whether they be traffickers or those complicit in these actions, must be held accountable. Her remarks come in the wake of a tragic event where at least 94 individuals have died amid the chaotic entry of over 50,000 migrants into Ceuta. Furthermore, Robles defended the National Intelligence Center (CNI), which had reportedly issued multiple warnings about the potential for mass migration weeks before the crisis unfolded, indicating that the Ministry of the Interior had been forewarned about the imminent threat.
Sources connected to state security reaffirmed that several alerts had been communicated to the Interior Ministry leading up to the crisis, which has raised serious questions regarding the preparedness of the government to handle such a situation. "My gratitude goes to the men and women of the CNI, the CIFAS, and the intelligence services of the Police and Civil Guard who operate under incredibly challenging conditions to fulfill their duties. The intelligence services of our Ministry and Defense, in collaboration with other countries, are working diligently on this matter. I implore Morocco to thoroughly investigate what has transpired," Robles stated, highlighting the need for international cooperation to address the crisis effectively.
