Significant Drop in Diesel Prices in Morocco: What to Expect

Diesel Prices Set to Decrease in Morocco

Starting midnight on June 1, the price of diesel fuel in Morocco will witness a reduction of 53 centimes per liter, as announced by local fuel distributors. This adjustment will bring the price of diesel back below the 14 dirham mark, settling at approximately 13.97 DH per liter. Meanwhile, the price of gasoline will remain stable at around 14.90 DH per liter, a rate that has been consistent since fluctuations were recorded on May 16. It is important to note that slight variations in prices may occur from one fuel station to another due to logistical costs.

Calls for Market Reform and Price Setting

Beyond this temporary decrease, the functioning of the hydrocarbon market in Morocco is coming under scrutiny. The Competition Council has recently called for a comprehensive overhaul of the current price-setting mechanisms, which it deems unsuitable for fostering healthy competition. The regulator argues that bi-weekly collective revisions constitute an anomaly that artificially aligns operators. Instead, it advocates for genuine liberalization, where each distributor would independently set their prices based on their own costs and strategies. According to the Competition Council, such a shift would lead to more responsive, transparent, and equitable pricing for Moroccan consumers. This ongoing dialogue about market reform highlights the need for a more competitive environment in the fuel industry, which could ultimately benefit drivers across the country.
