Neymar's Injury Update: Hope for World Cup 2026 Debut Against Morocco

Neymar's inclusion in Brazil's final squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which will be held across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, has sparked renewed enthusiasm among fans eager to see the Santos star don the Canarinha jersey in their opening match against Morocco. However, medical examinations have revealed that what was initially thought to be a simple "edema" in his calf is, in fact, a grade two muscle injury, complicating his participation.

The forward, who had kept a low profile since his arrival by helicopter at the training camp on Wednesday, made his first appearance at practice on Friday. Surprisingly, he appeared cheerful, engaging in light movements and conversing with members of the coaching staff, which has brought a glimmer of hope to fans and teammates alike.

According to images released by the Brazilian Football Confederation, Neymar attended workouts at the Granja Comary gym, wearing sports shoes to undergo specialized physical training. Later, he took part in gentle movements on the sideline of the field, adhering to the precautions necessitated by his condition. Local media reports indicate that the former Barcelona and PSG player did not join the team in group drills at any point, instead focusing on individual exercises tailored to his recovery.

In the meantime, the rest of the squad is undergoing intensive training as they prepare for their farewell match on Sunday at the iconic Maracanã Stadium against Panama. The situation remains challenging for Neymar, but he is currently under the care of the national team's medical staff, undertaking an intensive rehabilitation program aimed at ensuring his readiness for the Group C opener against Morocco, scheduled for June 13 in New Jersey.

The recovery efforts involve a combination of gym workouts and physiotherapy sessions. Notably, on Friday, Neymar stepped onto the training pitch for the first time, albeit in a very gentle manner. Reports from Ge noted that he was present alongside his teammates throughout the session, even sitting next to coach Carlo Ancelotti at one point.

During practice, he was also seen chatting with Rodrigo Caetano, the coordinator for Brazil's men's national teams. Despite missing the two pre-World Cup friendlies against Panama and Egypt and facing uncertainty regarding his debut in the tournament, Neymar maintained a positive and relaxed demeanor.

The severity of his injury, combined with the proximity of the FIFA World Cup, raised alarms within Ancelotti's camp. This situation prompted the CBF to conduct further tests, despite earlier reports from Santos indicating a less serious "edema." Ultimately, these tests confirmed that the injury was more serious than initially expected.

As per the medical team’s update last Thursday, Neymar will remain in the squad for what will be his fourth World Cup appearance. While the hope of seeing him compete against Morocco is gradually fading, his return to training provides reassurance to fans who cherish his playing style.
