Mass Crossings to Ceuta and Melilla Driven by Misinformation and Misinterpretation
In a significant development, Morocco's Interior Ministry has revealed that the recent surge in mass crossings to the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla was largely driven by misinformation circulating on social media platforms, as well as the influence of human trafficking networks. Additionally, the ministry pointed to a misinterpretation of a Spanish legal ruling that prohibits the immediate return of migrants who have been intercepted at sea. This misguided understanding has contributed to an alarming increase in attempts by individuals seeking to cross into Spain.
According to the ministry’s statement, approximately 40,000 individuals participated in the mass crossing attempts into Ceuta, while another 1,135 were intercepted while trying to enter Melilla. Tragically, the attempts have resulted in the loss of at least eleven lives, most of whom drowned during the perilous journey. The ministry has emphasized its commitment to fact-checking reports about fatalities reported from the other side of the border to ensure accuracy and accountability regarding these events.
