Morocco Joins US Task Force for 2026 World Cup Security: A Diplomatic Milestone

The United States government has officially included Morocco in the task force aimed at securing the FIFA World Cup 2026. This significant decision not only strengthens the diplomatic ties between Washington and Rabat but also aligns with Morocco's aspirations for the 2030 World Cup edition. By inviting Moroccan expertise, the White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026 is looking to coordinate the security for this global event effectively. Washington's choice is heavily influenced by Morocco's proven security capabilities showcased during the recent Africa Cup of Nations, which has pleased Ambassador Youssef Amrani, who perceives this partnership as "a window into the vitality, depth, and determination of a lasting friendship."

This sporting diplomacy reinforces an established military and economic alliance that has been in place since the Abraham Accords of 2020, during Donald Trump's presidency. The agreement comes at a time of sensitive geopolitical dynamics, underscored by reports from media outlets like Infobae, which highlights FIFA's decision to maintain Iran's participation in the tournament despite its tensions with the United States.

Beyond the immediate goal of the 2026 World Cup, this collaboration serves as a powerful argument for Rabat's ambitions regarding the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco plans to co-host with Spain and Portugal. The Moroccan government is actively advocating to host the final at the future Grand Stade Hassan II in Casablanca. Designed to accommodate 115,000 spectators, the stadium will feature suspended gardens beneath a lattice aluminum roof, surpassing the capacities of iconic venues like Santiago Bernabéu and Camp Nou.

Furthermore, FIFA has been increasingly signaling positive intentions towards Morocco, recently labeling it as an "exceptional host". The FIFA President has extended his gratitude to King Mohammed VI and the football federation leader Fouzi Lekjaa following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament that concluded with an administrative decision months later after Senegal contested a penalty. Bilateral ties are also highlighted by the opening of a new FIFA office in Rabat and the rollout of the Forward investment program.
