Modiba's Stunning Free-Kick Secures Vital Win for Sundowns in CAF Champions League Final

The Professional Provident Society (PPS) has announced an unprecedented profit share of R6.88 billion for its members, marking a significant milestone in its financial performance.

In a thrilling encounter during the first leg of the CAF Champions League final held in Pretoria, Mamelodi Sundowns edged out Moroccan side FAR Rabat with a narrow 1-0 victory, thanks to a sensational free-kick from Aubrey Modiba. This crucial goal came at the 37-minute mark, as Modiba unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that, despite being partially saved by goalkeeper Ahmed Tagnaouti, found its way into the corner of the net, giving Sundowns a slim advantage to carry into the return leg next Sunday in Rabat.

Though Sundowns emerged victorious, they had several opportunities to extend their lead, particularly during a dominant phase around the hour mark, which saw them squander three clear chances. Colombian striker Brayan Leon, who has been in remarkable form with 16 goals since joining the team four months ago, was notably guilty of missing two golden opportunities, while teammate Kutlwano Letlhaku also failed to capitalize on a one-on-one situation against Tagnaouti. Leon's frustration continued as he sent a powerful shot over the bar and followed it up with a poorly aimed drive that went wide of the target.

As the game progressed, FAR Rabat managed to escape further punishment when a late free-kick from Teboho Mokoena rattled the post, leaving Tagnaouti beaten and the scoreline intact. The match faced a brief interruption at the beginning of the second half due to technical issues with the VAR system, which ultimately resumed midway through the half without any further complications.

Sundowns' Portuguese coach, Miguel Cardoso, praised the quality of the match and acknowledged the threats posed by FAR's counterattacking abilities. He emphasized the need for his team to remain focused as they prepare for the challenging return leg. Cardoso, seeking redemption after finishing as a runner-up in the last two Champions League finals with Esperance and Sundowns, is determined to guide his team to victory.

On the other hand, Alexandre Santos, the head coach of FAR Rabat, expressed confidence that his team would be more competitive when they return home, despite failing to register a single shot on target in Pretoria. He recognized Sundowns as a formidable opponent, laden with technical skill and experience, but remains hopeful that FAR will control possession and create scoring opportunities in front of their home crowd.

Both clubs are vying for their second African championship title, with FAR having previously won in 1985 and Sundowns in 2016. The stakes are high, as the champions will receive a record $6 million prize, while the runners-up will take home $4 million. Furthermore, the victorious team will have the opportunity to compete against the Confederation Cup winners, USMA of Algeria, for the prestigious CAF Super Cup.
