Fes to Launch Study for 'Tram-Bus' Project with Over Half a Billion Dirhams Investment

Fes Embarks on Urban Transport Revolution

The city of Fes is poised to initiate a preliminary study for the development of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, commonly referred to as the 'Tram-Bus' or 'Busway.' This innovative project aims to enhance public transportation services and address the growing challenges faced by the urban transport sector in Morocco's spiritual capital. With an investment exceeding half a billion dirhams, the local government is taking significant steps to modernize the city’s transport infrastructure.

In this context, the Fes Regional Development Agency, acting as the project owner, plans to open bids for the public tender related to this study on May 27th of this year. This marks a pivotal phase in launching the first line of the proposed system. The decision aligns with the findings of the collective transport master plan for the urban routes of Fes, which was completed in 2025. This plan outlines five public transport lines to be gradually implemented by 2040.

Addressing Urban Transport Challenges

The first line's construction will commence in coordination with the Moroccan Ministry of Interior, the Fes-Meknes Regional Authority, the Fes-Meknes Regional Council, and the city of Fes itself. The forthcoming study, expected to last approximately eight months, aims to tackle several structural issues within the urban transport sector. These include the congestion of the current bus network, its radial design, poor coverage of peripheral areas, and the absence of multimodal exchange centers, alongside the increasing pressure on main road arteries.

This study is set to identify the most suitable technical solutions and refine the options concerning road configurations and stations. Additionally, it will provide a comprehensive urban and architectural vision for the project, estimate the total cost, and propose timelines for its implementation. A variety of data will be utilized in preparing this study, including the current status of transport services, demographic trends, and traffic patterns, which will inform the development of an efficient and modern public transport system in Fes.
