A Memorable Journey Through Morocco
The Vereda de la Trocha Hiking Association successfully completed its recent expedition to Morocco, which took place from April 16 to 19. A total of 50 members participated in this enriching cultural and tourist itinerary, allowing them to immerse themselves in the history, traditional commerce, and craftsmanship of the most emblematic cities of the neighboring country through a well-structured program.
The journey commenced on April 16 with the group departing from the Tarifa port to Tangier. Upon arriving in Moroccan territory around noon, the adventurers were transported by bus to the picturesque town of Arcila, where they enjoyed lunch and a guided tour of its charming Medina. Following this initial exploration, the expedition continued on its path to Fez, arriving late at night to rest before tackling the main activities of the trip.
Discovering Rich Cultural Insights
Friday, April 17, was dedicated entirely to exploring the Medina of Fez, a historical labyrinth spanning 300 hectares and approximately 9,000 streets. The participants from the two associations had the opportunity to admire the live craftsmanship of master artisans, focusing on traditional leather tanning processes, the use of medicinal plants, and copper craftsmanship. Additionally, they visited a historical museum, where an exceptional exhibition of an ancient holm oak caught the attention of attendees, concluding the morning with a tasting of local culinary delights. In the afternoon, the group visited a traditional pottery workshop, where they gained insights into the professional techniques of this ancient craft.
On Saturday, April 18, the expedition journeyed to Chauen, making a significant ethnographic stop at a rural market. Here, participants observed the commercial dynamics of Moroccan countryside life, from the sale of agricultural products to traditional tool vendors offering plows and rakes, as well as the on-site preparation of meats. The day concluded in Chauen, where the group wandered through its famous streets before embarking on their return journey.
On Sunday, April 19, expedition members enjoyed a free morning in the city of Chauen, globally renowned for its distinctive blue facades. This time allowed participants to stroll through the winding streets of the medina, shop, and savor Moroccan cuisine, highlighting the richness of its flavors and spices.
After completing their stay in the mountainous municipality, the group traveled back to the port of Tangier. From there, they continued their maritime journey across the Strait of Gibraltar back to Tarifa. Upon returning to national territory, the trip concluded with a final overland transfer to Los Barrios, where the members of Vereda de la Trocha reflected on this international experience that deepened their understanding of the history and customs of North Africa.
