Pentagon Praises Morocco as Premier Partner in 'African Lion' Exercise

Pentagon Highlights Morocco's Strategic Role in Military Cooperation

In a remarkable acknowledgment, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has reaffirmed Morocco's position as the United States' key partner in hosting the annual military exercise known as 'African Lion'. Hegseth emphasized that this exercise serves as a cornerstone for enhancing regional security cooperation. During a virtual speech at the closure ceremony of the maneuvers held in Agadir, he extended special thanks to Morocco for its unwavering commitment to the exercise, which has entered its 22nd year.

Hegseth, a member of the administration under former President Donald Trump, conveyed his appreciation at a ceremony that also honored General Mohamed Berrid, the Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces and Commander of the Southern Zone, with the American Meritorious Service Medal. He articulated that 'African Lion' transcends mere training exercises; it acts as a platform for innovation where new solutions and technologies can be collectively explored to enhance operational effectiveness on the battlefield. He described 'African Lion 2026' as an innovative laboratory that integrates artificial intelligence, robotics, and next-generation digital technologies into real-world operational scenarios across multiple domains.

Strengthening Alliances for a Secure Future

Hegseth articulated a clear message directed at those who aim to destabilize the continent: the collective determination of the U.S. and Morocco is steadfast, their capabilities are continuously expanding, and they stand ready to defend shared interests. General Berrid echoed this sentiment, reaffirming Morocco's unwavering resolve to enhance the accomplishments of the 'African Lion' exercises, ensuring they remain a renewed framework for strengthening preparedness, deepening partnerships, and nurturing a collective spirit to meet current challenges and anticipate future issues in African, Mediterranean, and Atlantic spaces.

Looking ahead, he noted that the year 2027 will mark 250 years of diplomatic relations, promising that the next edition of 'African Lion' will be particularly significant. This commemoration will serve as a tangible demonstration of the historical bonds that unite Rabat and Washington. Meanwhile, General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of USAFRICOM, underscored that 'African Lion' is a premier joint, multi-domain, multinational exercise in Africa. He reiterated that the commitment to a safe and prosperous Africa is not merely a promise but a formidable, unified force ready to make it a reality.

This year's edition included a variety of exercises designed to assess rapid deployment and intervention capabilities in multidimensional environments. The program featured ground command exercises, live-fire training, special operations, aerial and naval operations, as well as humanitarian missions. Importantly, the maneuvers placed a significant emphasis on innovation to enhance regional security, guided by the participating partners.
