Moroccans Become Largest Foreign Community in Israel Amid Global Migration Trends

The latest findings from the International Organization for Migration’s 2026 World Migration Report reveal a significant demographic shift, indicating that Moroccans now represent the largest foreign nationality residing in Israel. The Moroccan population in Israel has surged to an impressive 190,607, a marked increase from 158,396 reported in 2024. This notable rise of more than 32,000 individuals over just two years has propelled Moroccans ahead of other prominent communities, such as Ukrainians and Russians, whose populations stand at approximately 151,855 and 126,688, respectively.

While Israel emerges as a vital destination for Moroccan migrants, it is essential to recognize that the broader migration landscape is dominated by Spain and France, which continue to host the largest Moroccan populations globally. Current estimates indicate that Spain accommodates over 1.08 million Moroccans, closely followed by France with more than 1.06 million. Italy and Belgium also contribute to this diaspora, with populations nearing 473,000 and around 246,000, respectively.

The report identifies Morocco as a pivotal hub for two of Africa’s most active migration corridors: the routes leading to Spain and France. This migration phenomenon is heavily influenced not only by geographical proximity but also by longstanding historical and economic ties that have facilitated the movement of Moroccans to Europe for work, education, or family reunification. Remarkably, the migration patterns among Moroccans exhibit a near-equal distribution between men and women, highlighting a balanced demographic trend.

Moreover, Moroccan communities abroad are gaining increased prominence in political and public arenas. For instance, in the Netherlands, a total of 66 politicians of Moroccan descent secured seats during a recent election cycle, underscoring the growing influence of these communities on governance and civic engagement. The report attributes the persistent migration trend to various challenges faced in Morocco, including issues related to human development, peace, instability, and economic vulnerability. Additionally, the Moroccan passport currently permits access to only 72 countries without complicated visa processes, which can significantly impact migration decisions and opportunities.

While millions of Moroccans thrive overseas, the presence of foreign nationals in Morocco remains relatively minimal, constituting merely 0.3% of the total population. The largest foreign community in Morocco is comprised of French nationals, who number over 41,000, followed by Algerians at more than 15,700, and then Spaniards, Syrians, and Tunisians.

Furthermore, the report indicates that there are 10,609 Moroccan refugees spread across various countries, adding another layer to the complex migration narrative. As global migration patterns evolve, it is crucial to stay informed about these developments, which reflect broader socio-economic dynamics and the interconnectivity of communities worldwide.
