U.S. and Moroccan Forces Integrate Link 16 System Ahead of African Lion 2026 Exercises

Enhancing Military Collaboration with Link 16 Integration

In early February, Moroccan and American military forces engaged in significant technical discussions in Agadir concerning the integration of the Link 16 military communication system, a crucial preparatory step for the upcoming African Lion 2026 exercise (AL26), organized under the auspices of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM). The U.S. Air Force successfully established a connection to the Link 16 network with the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco (FAR), utilizing Moroccan IT equipment. This preliminary operation aimed to ensure compatibility among the involved devices, marking an essential milestone in enhancing communication capabilities between military partners.

Promoting Tactical Interoperability for Collective Security

The Link 16 system, which is employed by numerous allied militaries, facilitates secure and instantaneous data sharing among ground, air, and naval units. Its integration within a multinational framework necessitates meticulous alignment of equipment and protocols. According to the organizers of this multimodal exercise, the preparations are grounded in "the use of innovative technologies to foster regional security led by partners." This strategic approach underscores the critical role of technical mastery in the coordination of engaged forces. The collaboration between American and Moroccan specialists reflects an advanced level of readiness, characterized by a thorough examination of the technical parameters essential for the joint operation of their systems.

Scheduled from April 20 to May 8, African Lion 2026 will gather over 5,600 civilian and military personnel from more than 30 countries. Co-led by the Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), the exercise will take place across Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal. U.S. military authorities have highlighted that this exercise represents the largest annual operation conducted by AFRICOM, aimed at "developing the collective security capabilities of the United States, African nations, and their international allies." Given its geographical scope and the diversity of participating contingents, African Lion 2026 serves as a major training framework for the involved forces.
