Urgent Concerns Raised Over Dangerous Interventions Threatening Todgha Oasis
The regional office of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) in Tinghir has expressed significant alarm regarding the interventions occurring in the Todgha Oasis. These concerns arise in light of construction activities that have been accompanied by the alarming leakage of sewage water into the oasis. In an official statement, the PJD regional office stated that they have examined the ecological, social, and economic aspects of this issue, strongly denouncing the rationale behind these interventions that jeopardize the delicate balance of the oasis and infringe upon the rights of the local population.
Furthermore, the party has voiced its apprehension about the unpredictable consequences these actions may have on the sustainability of natural resources and ecological balances. They are demanding clarification on any institutional, legislative, or procedural frameworks under which such projects and interventions were approved. The PJD office noted the troubling discrepancy between the reality of these interventions and the rhetoric surrounding the preservation of the oasis, especially in light of recent discussions held during forums in Tinghir.
Particularly perplexed by the allowance of these construction activities, the PJD contrasted this with the prohibition of another project, the road connecting Ihgmen and Ait Asha, which was halted under the pretext of protecting the oasis. The regional office remarked that this situation is compounded by ongoing issues, such as the indiscriminate discharge of sewage water into the heart of the oasis along the Todgha river, which poses a severe threat to groundwater resources and public health.
Additionally, they highlighted a chronic problem related to urban planning laws and procedures that fail to consider the unique characteristics and living conditions of the oasis's inhabitants, thereby severely constraining their livelihoods. In response to these alarming developments, the PJD regional office has decided to organize a visit to the affected sites to prepare an advocacy file on this matter, assuring the public that they will keep them updated on any new developments.
