Significant Drug Seizures Point to Growing Hashish Trade from Morocco
The recent seizure of 75.1 tons of hashish in Cádiz, Spain, has starkly illuminated the escalating flow of narcotics from Morocco across the Mediterranean. This revelation is underscored by a series of security operations that have implicated Moroccans in extensive criminal networks engaged in the transport, storage, and distribution of these illicit substances throughout Europe. According to information published by the newspaper “Europa Sur,” which relied on insights from the Spanish intelligence center against terrorism and organized crime, authorities in Cádiz seized approximately 75.1 tons of cannabis resin in 2025, with a total of 198 tons confiscated across various regions of Spain. In addition, the province recorded 8.3 tons of cocaine seizures, accounting for nearly one-third of the national total, alongside 1,019 arrests related to drug offenses. The sheer volume of these seizures not only highlights the scale of the operations but also reveals the extensive networks of hashish trafficking from Morocco that are fueled by cross-border smuggling operations, which continuously inject their profits back into an underground drug economy.
Cross-Border Networks Reveal the Complexity of Drug Trafficking
In a recent incident, the first unit of the customs and border police under the Spanish Civil Guard thwarted an attempt to smuggle 10.2 kilograms of hashish from Morocco at the port of Ceuta, arresting a Moroccan national residing in France who was preparing to board a ferry to Algeciras. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the activities of these criminal organizations. Furthermore, investigations in Italy have unveiled the transnational nature of these operations, revealing a complex web of networks and a variety of substances being trafficked.
Italian authorities recently arrested a Moroccan man and woman in the southern region between Capaccio Paestum and Eboli, linked to drug possession with intent to distribute as part of a cross-border criminal initiative. As reported by “La Milano,” investigators discovered approximately 2.4 kilograms of cocaine and crack within their vehicle. Additional searches of residences yielded more quantities of hashish from Morocco, marijuana, heroin, and cocaine. Concurrently, the operation also highlighted the involvement in arms possession, with Italian authorities seizing three weapons along with 280 rounds of ammunition, implicating a Moroccan national.
Moreover, another operation in northwest Italy uncovered additional layers of this illicit activity, leading to the arrest of a Moroccan individual in Albenga for involvement in cocaine distribution. The newspaper “La Repubblica” revealed that a three-month investigation had exposed a drug trafficking network operating in the Albenga plain, resulting in legal actions against individuals significantly engaged in the distribution of large amounts of cocaine and heroin. These occurrences indicate that the scope of the activity has expanded beyond mere transportation of hashish; it now involves cross-border criminal networks with repeated involvement of Moroccan nationals, whose roles encompass transportation, storage, distribution, and promotion of various drugs, thereby making the profits from these substances a significant contributor to their underground economy.
