Significant Increase in Grain Storage Capacity in Morocco

Overview of Grain Storage Capacity Growth

Morocco has witnessed a remarkable increase in its total grain storage capacity, which reached 68.7 million quintals by the end of 2025, up from approximately 60 million quintals at the end of 2024. This growth positions the Casablanca-Settat region at the forefront in terms of storage capabilities. According to data from the National Office of Professional Grains and Pulses (ONICL), various storage entities contribute significantly to this capacity, with storage organizations (OS) providing about 43.29 million quintals, followed by industrial mills at 17.30 million quintals, and compound feed producers with approximately 8.12 million quintals.

The data also highlights the ongoing modernization of storage mechanisms in Morocco, as over 40% of the storage capacity now relies on advanced silo systems. This modern infrastructure ensures high-quality standards and extended preservation periods for the stored grains. Nationally, there are around 169 warehouses designated for grain storage, with both the Casablanca-Settat and Fez-Meknes regions leading, each boasting 56 warehouses, which account for 33% of the total nationwide. They are followed by the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra and East regions, with 14 and 13 warehouses, respectively.

Shifts Towards Larger Storage Units

The Souss-Massa region has 12 warehouses, while the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region has 8. Additionally, the Marrakech-Safi and Beni Mellal-Khenifra regions each possess 5 warehouses. An analysis of the data reveals a trend among sector players towards adopting larger storage units, as 50% of the national warehouses exceed a storage capacity of 170,000 quintals, with the average capacity of a single warehouse standing at 265,000 quintals. In terms of actual storage volume, the Casablanca-Settat region leads with capacities reaching 19 million quintals, which represents 44% of the national storage capacity, followed closely by the Fez-Meknes region at 11 million quintals, or 26% of the national total.

The same source reminded that the National Office of Professional Grains and Pulses had previously revealed flexible procedures that allow professionals to lease their excess storage capacity or make it available to other operators as part of what is known as "temporary storage." This mechanism enabled an additional storage capacity of 16 million quintals to be mobilized for the 2025 storage season, distributed across approximately 44 warehouses nationwide.
