Revolutionizing Transportation in Morocco: New High-Speed Rail Projects Announced

The Moroccan transportation system is undergoing a significant transformation, as announced by the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdel Samad Qiyouh. During an informative day dedicated to the prospective program for construction and public works contracts in 2026, the minister unveiled a series of structural projects in the high-speed rail sector that are expected to revolutionize travel times between several major cities by the year 2030.

One of the most notable projects is the introduction of a new high-speed line that will drastically reduce travel time between Kenitra and Marrakech to just two hours and thirty minutes, down from approximately six hours currently. This development marks a substantial shift in national transportation services, indicating a commitment to improving efficiency and connectivity.

Furthermore, Qiyouh highlighted that the new rail network will have a direct impact on linking airports with major urban centers. The travel time between Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca and the capital city of Rabat will be reduced to just 35 minutes, while the journey from the airport to Marrakech will take only 55 minutes. Additionally, the trip between Casablanca and Tangier will be shortened to an hour and thirty-five minutes.

In relation to the Souss-Massa region, the minister revealed the completion of the final practical study for the railway project connecting Marrakech to Agadir, which is estimated to cost around 50 billion dirhams. This project is considered one of the major strategic initiatives in the south of the kingdom.

Moreover, the minister pointed out the expansion of the high-speed rail line towards Agadir, which will enable a reduction in travel time between Marrakech and Agadir to approximately one hour over a distance of 240 kilometers. He indicated that the technical and implementation studies for this project are ready, with a total cost estimated at 56 billion dirhams.

Additionally, the plan does not stop there; a project has also been announced to connect the city of Essaouira to the national rail network, which will ensure that travel time between Essaouira and Marrakech does not exceed one hour. Meanwhile, the journey from Agadir to Essaouira via Chichaoua is expected to take around one hour and twenty-two minutes.
