Strengthening Air Connectivity: Morocco's Minister of Transport Advances International Agreements

Morocco's Commitment to Enhancing Air Links

Abdel Samad Kiyouh, the Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, continued his efforts on the final day of the Global Conference on Civil Aviation Support held in Marrakech, where he undertook discussions and agreements aimed at bolstering air connectivity between Morocco and various international destinations. During this significant event, Kiyouh met with Ahmed Baba Ahmed, the Director General of the Civil Aviation Agency of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, engaging in specialized consultations to enhance the air linkages between the two fraternal nations.

In a press statement following the meeting, Kiyouh remarked that interactions with the Mauritanian counterparts always possess a “unique flavor, filled with brotherhood and cooperation.” He expressed his request for Mauritania's support of the Open Skies Initiative for Africa, emphasizing that both parties deliberated on the possibility of launching new flight routes between Nouakchott and the city of Dakhla. Kiyouh believes that such a development would significantly strengthen communication and promote trade between the southern region of Morocco and Mauritania's capital.

International Agreements and Future Prospects

Ahmed Baba Ahmed described his meeting with the Moroccan Minister as “fruitful.” He expressed his contentment with Morocco hosting these international activities, considering it a shared participation among the Maghreb nations and the broader Arab world. The Mauritanian official highlighted the event as a contribution to the evolution of air communication and aviation transportation. Kiyouh's advocacy for stimulating open skies, particularly among Arab countries and regional nations, was met with Ahmed’s agreement, pledging to work towards making this aspiration a reality in the near future.

Moreover, Kiyouh signed three bilateral agreements with the Republic of Guyana, the Republic of Haiti, and the Republic of Mauritius, focusing on the development of air transport services between the involved parties. These agreements aim to establish a modern, balanced legal framework that aligns with international standards. They stipulate multiple airline selections, the operation of weekly frequencies, and include provisions related to civil aviation safety and security.

Morocco and the involved nations anticipate that these agreements will open significant opportunities for enhancing cooperation among the respective airlines, particularly through the establishment of commercial and technical partnerships. This collaboration is expected to improve air connectivity and facilitate the movement of passengers and goods, thereby fostering economic growth and integration.
