Release of Three Senegalese and One French Fan in Morocco
In a recent development, Morocco has released three Senegalese fans and one French national who had been serving a three-month prison sentence for their involvement in violent incidents that occurred during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in the capital city, Rabat. Upon their release from the "Arajat 2" prison, the fans were greeted by members of the Senegalese embassy and were transported in a vehicle belonging to the Moroccan royal gendarmerie to a police station near the city of Salé, where they were subsequently freed.
The incident highlighted ongoing concerns regarding crowd control and safety at major sporting events, as a total of 15 Senegalese fans are still serving sentences ranging from six months to a year. These sentences were confirmed last Monday during an appeals process after the fans were found guilty of offenses including rioting, violence against security forces, vandalism of sports facilities, invading the pitch, and throwing projectiles. The Moroccan authorities are under pressure to ensure that such incidents do not reoccur in the future as they prepare to host more international events.
