Protests Erupt in Casablanca for Rapper's Release Amidst Free Speech Concerns

Massive Protests in Support of Moroccan Rapper

On July 22, 2026, a significant gathering took place outside the Ain Sebaa court in Casablanca, where hundreds of supporters rallied for the release of Moroccan rapper El Mahdi Lyoubi, popularly known by his stage name "Mehdi Black Wind." The artist was detained earlier in July and is currently facing charges related to a song that his supporters assert critiques the Moroccan authorities. This situation has ignited a passionate response from fans and fellow artists, who view the rapper's arrest as an alarming infringement on freedom of expression.

Legal Struggles Amidst Calls for Justice

Hakim Sikouk, who serves as the national coordinator for the support committee advocating for Lyoubi's release, revealed that the rapper is being prosecuted under Article 179 of the Moroccan Penal Code. This article carries a potential sentence of up to two years in prison. Sikouk emphasized the implications of the charges, highlighting that the artist's lyrics, which challenge the current regime, have stirred concern among authorities. Protesters gathered outside the courthouse armed with portraits of Lyoubi, passionately demanding his immediate release. One protester, Houda Abouz, also a rapper, stated, "My presence here, as well as the presence of many people, is to support Mehdi but also to demand his immediate release. His arrest makes no sense. It makes no sense at all, except for the fact that what we say [sing] is disturbing, that rappers’ voices [opinions] are disturbing." This statement underscores the broader issue of artistic censorship and the risks artists face when voicing dissenting opinions in Morocco.
