Feijóo's Visit to Ceuta Amid Ongoing Challenges

The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has chosen the cultural center Estación de Ferrocarril to address the citizens of Ceuta during his fifth visit to the city following the massive influx of migrants at the end of July. Alongside him, the regional PP president, Juan Vivas, expressed confidence that his party will emerge victorious in the upcoming elections scheduled for November 29, emphasizing the need for a profound change in national politics that would better address the citizens' needs and the challenges facing Spain.

Vivas underscored the principle that politics should serve the people, not private interests, advocating for public management characterized by transparency, decency, and integrity. He criticized the current government's approach led by Pedro Sánchez, pointing out the significance of launching this pre-campaign in Ceuta, a city that has become emblematic of the challenges facing Spain.

“His gesture is immensely significant; it highlights that Ceuta has been living in an exceptional situation for the past two months—a critical and utterly unjust situation,” Vivas remarked, asserting that the events occurring in Ceuta represent one of the gravest national security issues in Spain's recent history.

The Abandonment of Ceuta by the Central Government

According to Vivas, the treatment of Ceuta by the central government can be summed up in one word: abandonment. He reiterated that on July 30 and 31, around 100,000 individuals were used to undermine Spain's territorial integrity, describing this as an invasion that led to the tragic loss of at least 141 lives, while also leaving the city in an untenable situation that persists today.

“Ceuta is not what it used to be; we, the citizens, have had to alter our way of life, witnessing a diminishment of our fundamental rights, a loss of security, tranquility, and freedom, alongside the deterioration of essential public services,” Vivas stated. He highlighted the current atmosphere in Ceuta as akin to a pressure cooker, ready to explode at any moment, and lamented that this crisis could have been averted had the necessary actions been taken.

Moreover, he pointed out the alarming lack of response to prior warnings, recalling that similar incidents had occurred in the past, including a less severe yet noteworthy event in May 2021. Following the recent invasion, Vivas criticized the government for failing to deploy all available resources to restore normalcy in Ceuta, with no efforts made to return migrants, as those who left did so voluntarily.

Vivas asserted that Sánchez has failed to fulfill his constitutional duties to protect the integrity of Spain and the fundamental rights of Ceuta's citizens, rendering him unfit to continue as president. He noted that on the very day Sánchez acknowledged the invasion, he simultaneously announced his vacation plans, a move Vivas deemed unacceptable.

“It is unacceptable that the president of the government recently asked the people of Ceuta for patience, as they have been living under immense pressure for two months. It is equally unacceptable that he suggested we should accept our new reality of living in camps,” Vivas concluded, contrasting Sánchez's priorities with those of Feijóo, who has shown a commitment to addressing the pressing issues affecting Ceuta.
