Morocco's Football Federation Cancels Planned Friendly Against El Salvador
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has officially informed its Salvadoran counterpart about the cancellation of the friendly match originally scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. This decision comes as part of the preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, as stated in a correspondence dated April 21, 2026. The federation explained that the cancellation was due to the potential absence of at least one-third of the players who were expected to be included in the squad for submission to FIFA. The reasons include some players' commitments to their clubs in continental competitions, changes in local match schedules across several countries, and injuries affecting key players who regularly represent the national team.
Given these circumstances, the federation deemed it impractical to travel to the United States for the match on the previously set date of May 29. Consequently, they confirmed their inability to compete in Washington. However, the Moroccan federation proposed an alternative to the Salvadoran federation, suggesting that the friendly match be held on June 2 in Morocco, specifically at the Rabat stadium. They expressed willingness to cover the international travel expenses, as well as local costs for the Salvadoran team.
This match was intended to be part of Morocco's preparation for the World Cup 2026, with the national team, known as the Atlas Lions, actively seeking to enhance their performance through a series of friendly matches leading up to the global tournament.
