Nigeria and Morocco to Finalize $25 Billion Gas Pipeline Agreement

Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline: A Landmark Agreement

Nigeria and Morocco are on the brink of signing a significant intergovernmental agreement this year, paving the way for the ambitious $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project. This development was announced by Amina Benkhadra, the Director-General of Morocco’s Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines, in a recent communication with Reuters. The project, which is officially referred to as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, aims to create a vast infrastructure spanning approximately 6,900 kilometers and will utilize both offshore and onshore routes. With an impressive capacity to transport up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually, it is designed to cater not only to Morocco's energy needs but also to facilitate exports to Europe, thereby enhancing energy security across the region.

Benkhadra emphasized in her correspondence that this forthcoming agreement is set to bolster coordination among the nations involved, ensuring a more effective implementation of the project. As part of this initiative, a high authority dedicated to the pipeline will be established in Nigeria, comprising ministerial representatives from each of the 13 participating countries. This body will be tasked with providing essential political and regulatory oversight, which is crucial for the project's success. Furthermore, she highlighted that the pipeline's strategic design will enable it to serve both regional and international markets, firmly establishing Morocco as a vital energy conduit between Africa and Europe.

Notably, the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline will follow a hybrid route that combines offshore and onshore segments, covering the extensive 6,900-kilometer distance. This infrastructure is not only anticipated to supply energy to Morocco but is also expected to play a pivotal role in supporting gas exports to Europe, solidifying Morocco's position as a critical energy bridge in the region. Benkhadra also mentioned that the project will be executed in phases, allowing various sections to be developed independently, which is aimed at generating early economic returns instead of waiting for a singular final investment decision.
