Morocco's Urban Success: Six Cities Among Africa's Top 50
According to the latest Global Cities Index 2026 published by British consultancy Oxford Economics, Morocco has successfully placed six of its cities in the prestigious Top 50 African cities list. Leading the pack is Casablanca, which secures its position as the most prominent Moroccan city, followed closely by the capital, Rabat, as well as Tangier, Agadir, Fes, and Marrakech. Notably, no African city has made it into the global Top 200, with Casablanca ranking 384th worldwide, thereby claiming the sixth position on the African continent. Rabat follows suit, ranking 445th globally and 9th in Africa.
Among the Moroccan cities, Tangier holds the 622nd spot globally, while Agadir comes in at 629th. Fes and Marrakech are positioned at 655th and 671st respectively. Remarkably, Morocco matches Egypt in the number of cities featured in Africa's Top 50. The cities are evaluated based on a comprehensive index that utilizes 27 different indicators, categorized into five critical domains: economy, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance. The economy alone contributes 30% to the final score, with human capital and quality of life each accounting for 25%, leaving 10% for both environmental and governance factors.
In terms of overall African rankings, Cairo tops the charts with a global ranking of 255, followed by Accra at 302 and Port Louis at 305. Nairobi also ranks high, placing fourth in Africa, ahead of Algiers. On the global stage, New York is recognized as the leading city, followed by London and Paris. This index is a crucial tool for comparing urban performance and characteristics, highlighting the competitive nature of major cities worldwide.
