Morocco's Transportation Minister Assures Timely Progress for World Cup Preparations

Strategic Developments in Transportation for the World Cup

In response to comments made by Mohamed Amouri, a member of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises, regarding the need to enhance strategic capacities for the upcoming World Cup, Abdel Samad Quiouh, Morocco's Minister of Transport and Logistics, assured stakeholders that various projects associated with this global event are progressing exactly as scheduled, with completion expected by 2030. Quiouh elaborated on the advancements in rail transport, highlighting the significant developments of both high-speed and regular trains. Notably, the new regional trains are expected to connect Mohammed V Airport to major cities including Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech, with the high-speed train service anticipated to reach Marrakech by 2029.

The minister also pointed out that the capacity of national airports is projected to double from the current 40 million passengers to 80 million as part of ongoing improvements in air infrastructure. On the logistics front, Quiouh mentioned that the total area of logistics zones across the twelve regions of the kingdom is set to expand to 750 hectares. This initiative is part of a broader vision aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the national economy and improving supply chains in preparation for the World Cup.

Challenges in Road Safety and Infrastructure

In a separate discussion, Minister Quiouh acknowledged that his ministry has not met its goals regarding road safety measures and the implementation of the national road safety strategy. During his response to a question from Mohamed Bakouri, the head of the National Rally of Independents in the House of Councillors, Quiouh attributed these shortcomings to a significant rise in traffic accidents, particularly among motorcyclists, who account for 44% of all incidents. He noted that this issue is compounded by widespread disregard for traffic laws and a dramatic increase in the number of vehicles and motorcycles on the roads. Despite these challenges, Quiouh emphasized that the ministry must take responsibility in combating this alarming trend.

As the nation gears up for the World Cup, voices of concern have emerged regarding the prioritization of stadiums over essential infrastructure like roads, water supply, schools, and hospitals, suggesting that these vital projects have become mere dreams overshadowed by the focus on the World Cup. Critics have raised alarms about the dangerous and reckless behavior of motorcyclists, despite ongoing security campaigns, questioning whether authorities will intervene adequately when incidents occur. Furthermore, there are growing frustrations over the slow progress in rebuilding homes for earthquake victims, with many still waiting for keys to their new homes while stadiums are quickly constructed.

These sentiments reflect a broader narrative among citizens who feel neglected in favor of grand sporting events, emphasizing that true development should prioritize human welfare over mere infrastructure for sports. The call for accountability and action from the government remains urgent, as the nation approaches this significant global event.
