Amalia Ortuño Kicks Off International Season in Rabat
The talented Costa Rican athlete, Amalia Ortuño Lizano, is gearing up to compete in the Grand Prix of Para Athletics in Rabat 2026 this week, officially launching her international season. Ortuño will take part in a series of events, including shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw, showcasing her skills on a global stage. According to the schedule, she will engage in shot put on Thursday, April 23, at 8:30 a.m., followed by javelin throw on Friday, April 24, at 2:30 a.m., and wrapping up with the discus throw on Saturday, April 25, at 10:40 a.m., all times reflecting Costa Rica's timezone.
The Grand Prix event will take place in Morocco, drawing high-level para-athletes from various corners of the globe, and is a crucial part of the international circuit for this discipline. Ortuño's participation is not just about competing; it is also a strategic move as she aims to enhance her competitive performance ahead of the Central American and Caribbean Para Games, and to improve her personal records in pursuit of qualifying for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
Amalia arrives at this competition following her performance at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships held in New Delhi, India, where she achieved commendable results, finishing eighth in the discus throw and tenth in javelin. Her coach, José Andrés Pacheco, expressed optimism about her upcoming competitions, stating, "Amalia competed in the World Para Athletics Championship in New Delhi, finishing in eighth place in discus throw and tenth in javelin, results she aims to improve upon in this new season."
Before heading to Morocco, the national team undertook an acclimatization period in Madrid, Spain, to adjust to the time zone and prepare effectively for the challenges ahead. It is also noteworthy that Ortuño, a six-time world champion in adaptive CrossFit, missed this year's qualifying process for that sport due to ongoing medical treatment.
