Morocco's Commitment to Health in Africa Highlighted at One Health Summit

The President of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, representing His Majesty King Mohammed VI at the "One Health" summit held on Tuesday in Lyon, emphasized the tangible initiatives led by Morocco under the guidance of His Majesty to improve health conditions and promote a healthier environment across Africa.

In his speech during the ninth edition of the "One Planet" summit centered on the theme of "One Health," Talbi Alami stated that, "Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has adopted a clear approach that focuses on health, climate, sustainable agriculture, and the welfare of Africa." He elaborated that this commitment is manifested through concrete initiatives, including the (Triple A) initiative launched by His Majesty to adapt African agriculture to climate change. He noted that when the Ebola outbreak struck several African nations, Morocco demonstrated a spirit of responsibility and solidarity by maintaining its flights to the affected regions.

Additionally, the Kingdom provided significant support to African countries, in line with the royal directives, to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. He pointed out that "Africa is one of the continents most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, health risks, and epidemics. The COVID-19 pandemic painfully reminded us of this reality and simultaneously exposed the limitations of international solidarity, a situation that is no longer acceptable." In this context, he called for the formulation of an ambitious health plan for Africa based on an integrated and coordinated approach in the spirit of "One Health."

Talbi Alami asserted that "in an interconnected world, isolation is merely an illusion. No country can face these challenges alone," stressing the importance of knowledge sharing, strengthening capacities, facilitating technology transfer, and investing collaboratively.

Concluding his remarks, the President of the House stated, "The pandemic has taught us an essential lesson: our destinies are interconnected in an indivisible manner, and individual solutions to global challenges are nothing but an illusion."

The "One Health" summit brings together, for the first time, heads of state and government from around the world, along with representatives from international and regional organizations, parliamentarians, scientists, and representatives from the private sector, civil society, local communities, development banks, and youth, all aimed at accelerating the implementation of the "One Health" approach, which emphasizes the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health. This initiative is part of the "One Planet" summit, which is now in its ninth edition.

The summit, organized at the initiative and under the presidency of French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to strengthen monitoring and prevention systems while mobilizing various stakeholders from the public and private sectors involved in implementing concrete measures. It also seeks to rethink the global health institutional framework, positioning the "One Health" approach as a guiding principle for shaping public policies.
