Morocco is set to position itself as a key player in energy exports to Europe, with the launch of one of the most significant electrical interconnection projects to date. The North African nation has thrown its support behind the Sila Atlantik initiative, which aims to link its renewable energy generation facilities directly to Germany through two submarine cables, each stretching approximately 4,800 kilometers. This groundbreaking project is designed to transport electricity generated from Morocco's solar and wind farms straight to the German market.
The anticipated capacity of this interconnection is a staggering 3.6 gigawatts, backed by an estimated investment ranging from €30 billion to €40 billion. In comparison, this infrastructure far surpasses existing connections that currently link Spain and Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar. Notably, the cables will not connect in Spain; instead, they will traverse the Atlantic façade of Europe before arriving in Germany.
The system will comprise two independent high-voltage direct current infrastructures, each capable of 1.8 gigawatts, totalling a capacity of 3.6 gigawatts of electricity transmission from Morocco to Germany. To support this ambitious connection, developers are also exploring the establishment of solar and wind facilities within Moroccan territory. Additionally, the initiative plans to incorporate battery storage systems to ensure a more stable electricity generation, allowing for continuous supply throughout the day despite the inherent variability of renewable sources.
Proponents of the project assert that the interconnection could achieve over 7,000 equivalent full load hours annually. They estimate an export potential of approximately 26 terawatt-hours per year, which they believe would significantly contribute to meeting Germany's energy demands.
