Morocco Uncovers Terrorist Cell Linked to Extremist Activities

In a decisive operation, Morocco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), which operates under the Directorate General for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), successfully dismantled a terrorist cell comprised of six members over the weekend of April 5th and 6th. These individuals are suspected of engaging in a series of criminal activities motivated by extremist ideologies, which include theft, burglary, and money laundering, all conducted under the disturbing principle of "justifying looting." The arrests took place through coordinated efforts in various locations, including Kenitra, Casablanca, the Dar El Gueddari area in Sidi Kacem province, and Sidi Taïbi, as confirmed by a statement from the BCIJ.

As part of the extensive investigation, authorities executed search operations that yielded significant evidence. They seized a variety of extremist literature and manuscripts, along with an assortment of bladed weapons, both sharp and blunt, and cash in Moroccan dirhams believed to be derived from their criminal enterprises. Additionally, investigators confiscated items typically associated with criminal activity, including a balaclava, gloves, and three vehicles. Among these were two vans suspected of being utilized for transporting stolen goods, along with a motorcycle that may have facilitated their illicit endeavors.

The investigation, bolstered by surveillance efforts, has unveiled that the suspects had embraced extremist ideologies and were actively involved in theft and burglary as part of a broader criminal network designed to generate illicit profits. Their operational strategy appeared to focus on targeting livestock farms in rural areas surrounding Kenitra and Sidi Slimane, executing robberies, and subsequently reselling the stolen goods in local markets in Joumaa Shim (Safi province) and Zemamra (Sidi Bennour province).

Ongoing investigations are aimed at fully unraveling the extent of the suspects' criminal activities, discerning connections between these actions and their extremist affiliations, and identifying any potential accomplices who may be involved. The individuals have been placed into custody while the BCIJ conducts a thorough judicial investigation under the oversight of the public prosecutor responsible for terrorism and extremism cases.
