Morocco Reopens Visa Applications for Taiwanese Tourists
As of September 21, 2026, Morocco has officially resumed accepting tourist visa applications from holders of Taiwanese passports. This decision comes two months after the visa processing was suspended, according to the Central News Agency, which reported on statements made by Taiwan's Foreign Ministry. A recent communication from a staff member at Taiwan's office in Tokyo revealed that the Moroccan Embassy in Japan is now processing Visa Confirmation Letters (VCLs) for tourists. However, it is important to note that applications for other visa purposes remain on hold. Taiwan has also indicated that it will continue to deny visa applications from Moroccan citizens until these restrictions are lifted.
The suspension of the visa processing by the Moroccan Embassy in Japan took effect on July 23 without any official explanation provided. In retaliation, Taiwan halted its visa processing for Moroccan nationals starting July 31, with exceptions only for specially sanctioned cases. Taiwanese travelers are now required to obtain their VCLs directly from the embassy in Tokyo and are ineligible for the Moroccan e-visa system.
It is noteworthy that Morocco does not officially recognize Taiwan as a separate entity and adheres to the One China principle, maintaining formal diplomatic relations solely with the People's Republic of China. As a result, there are no official diplomatic ties between Rabat and Taipei, which adds complexity to the visa application processes between the two regions.
