Morocco Frees Three Senegalese Football Fans After Three-Month Detention
In a significant legal development, three Senegalese football fans who were detained in Morocco have been released after serving a three-month sentence. Their imprisonment stemmed from incidents of unrest that occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations final match between Morocco and Senegal, which took place on January 18. Senegalese lawyer Patrick Kabo confirmed their release, stating that the fans would be free as of Saturday and plan to visit the city of Fes before returning to their home capital, Dakar, to reunite with their families.
In addition to their release, Lawyer Kabo disclosed that the defense team has submitted a formal request for a pardon that includes other detained fans. This request has been processed through a Moroccan lawyer of Senegalese descent who has taken the necessary steps to ensure that it reaches the appropriate authorities. The lawyer emphasized that many detained fans expressed no animosity towards Morocco, attributing the disturbances to organizational issues within the stadium. They have also expressed a strong desire to return to their home country peacefully and without further tension.
