Morocco: June to Host a Dozen African National Teams for Friendly Matches

Upcoming International Friendlies in Morocco

As the international football community gears up for the FIFA international break from June 1 to June 9, numerous African national teams are set to converge in Morocco for a series of friendly matches. This initiative aims to provide teams with vital preparation ahead of key competitions, including the upcoming qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

Although Moroccan fans won't have the opportunity to see the Lions of the Atlas play at home anytime soon, with their scheduled friendlies taking place in the United States against El Salvador on June 3 and Norway on June 7, the stadiums in Morocco will be bustling with activity. The North African nation has emerged as a popular destination for friendly matches, as noted by _Afrik-Foot_.

In March, six teams, including Togo, Benin, Libya, Niger, Liberia, and Guinea, had already visited Morocco for similar engagements. Initially, Mauritania was also expected to participate, but they opted to accept an invitation from Argentina to travel to Buenos Aires instead. Palestine, too, withdrew from participating due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which hindered their travel plans.

Confirmed Teams and Matches Scheduled

As the June window approaches, several teams have confirmed their participation in friendly matches in Morocco. Notable among these are Niger, Togo, Guinea, Liberia, and Benin, who have all agreed to the plan. Additionally, Mauritania, Botswana, Sudan, and the Central African Republic are also set to join the fray. It's plausible that the total number of participating teams could swell to ten or twelve, as this represents their last opportunity to compete in matches before the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin in September.

Moreover, the under-23 teams will also make the trip to Morocco, indicating a vibrant schedule across major cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, and Tangier. This influx of national teams showcases Morocco's growing stature as a key player in hosting international football events, further solidifying its position as a hub for African football.
