Morocco Releases Senegalese Supporters After Serving Time
In a significant development following the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, three Senegalese fans have been released from a Moroccan prison on April 18, 2026, after serving a three-month sentence. These supporters were previously incarcerated due to their involvement in violent incidents during the AFCON final held in Rabat. The release took place at the Al Arjat 2 prison, located northeast of the capital, where the trio was observed leaving in a police vehicle before being taken to a police station for processing.
Upon their release, the fans were warmly welcomed by representatives from the Senegalese embassy. One of the supporters expressed gratitude towards Morocco, stating, "dima Maroc, dima Maghrib" which translates to "long live Morocco." This sentiment reflects a desire for continued positive relations despite the tumultuous circumstances that led to their imprisonment. Their defense lawyer, Patrick Kabou, praised the diplomatic efforts that facilitated their release and emphasized the need for public support to help the fans adjust after their time in custody.
However, the situation remains complex as there are still 15 other Senegalese supporters who are currently serving sentences ranging from six months to one year, following their convictions for similar charges of hooliganism, which included acts of violence against law enforcement and damage to sports facilities. These fans were detained since the January 18 final, which originally ended with Senegal's victory but was later awarded to Morocco upon appeal. Additionally, a French-Algerian man who was imprisoned for throwing a water bottle during the match was also released on the same day.
