Morocco Emerges as a Leading Military Drone Power in Africa

Morocco's Strategic Drone Development

Morocco has established itself as a formidable player in the realm of military drones, boasting one of the most extensive fleets on the African continent. A recent report by Military Africa highlights that Morocco ranks second only to Egypt in terms of total drone acquisitions, with a staggering 279 units documented. This impressive figure positions Morocco at the forefront of the continent's burgeoning unmanned aerial vehicle market, which has seen North Africa dominate with a total of 1,026 drone units. This regional dominance is underscored by Egypt's lead with 313 units, followed closely by Morocco and Algeria, which possesses 128 units.

The Military Africa report emphasizes Morocco's significant investment in advanced drone technologies, specifically high-end Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) and High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) capabilities. Across Africa, Class III MALE and HALE systems collectively account for 657 units, indicating an increasing reliance on long-range surveillance and combat drones in military operations. Morocco's drone fleet has been primarily built through strategic acquisitions from a variety of international suppliers, with Israeli-made systems comprising the largest segment of Morocco’s inventory, complemented by American and Turkish platforms. Notably, Morocco is not only focused on procurement but is also advancing towards local production, with Israeli firm BlueBird Aero Systems previously announcing plans to manufacture drones within the country. Recent developments suggest a concerted effort to cultivate a domestic drone industry, further enhancing Morocco's capabilities.

Shifts in the African Drone Landscape

The report reveals that across Africa, there have been 234 procurement deals accounting for 1,959 drone units sourced from 21 different supplier nations. Remarkably, over half of these acquisitions occurred between 2020 and 2026, highlighting a rapid escalation in drone militarization during this timeframe, with 1,054 units acquired. China has emerged as the leading supplier of drones, delivering 587 units to 20 African nations, while Turkey has quickly risen to prominence as a significant player in the market, particularly with the Bayraktar TB2, now the most widely distributed drone across the continent, operating in 11 countries and totaling 291 units recorded in the report.

This study also underscores the concerning trend of armed drones being deployed in active conflict zones, with countries such as Ethiopia, Libya, Sudan, and Mali procuring combat-capable systems from various suppliers as drone warfare becomes increasingly prevalent in African security strategies. Concurrently, local manufacturing capabilities are expanding, with nine African countries having established indigenous drone production initiatives. South Africa leads this segment with 94 locally produced units, followed by Nigeria (36), Algeria (29), and Ethiopia (21), culminating in a total of 216 indigenous drone units across the continent. Military Africa characterizes the current era as the most rapid phase of drone militarization in Africa's history, propelled by emerging suppliers, regional conflicts, and heightened investments in surveillance and combat technologies.
