Enhancing Legislative Ties Between Morocco and Malawi

In a significant step towards fostering diplomatic relations, the Moroccan House of Councillors and the National Assembly of Malawi have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing parliamentary cooperation. This important agreement was finalized on Friday in Istanbul during the 152nd session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union's General Assembly. The signing ceremony involved key figures, including Mohamed Ould Al-Rachid, the President of the Moroccan House of Councillors, and Samir Gafar Suleiman, the President of Malawi's National Assembly.

The memorandum seeks to establish a robust parliamentary partnership that emphasizes the exchange of expertise and experiences, promotes mutual visits, and enhances coordination and consultation in regional and international parliamentary forums. This initiative is rooted in the mutual respect and solidarity that characterize the relationship between Morocco and Malawi, reflecting a shared commitment to building a mutually beneficial African partnership.

Commitment to African Development

During the discussions, Ould Al-Rachid highlighted the depth of the ties that unite Morocco and Malawi, emphasizing the importance of African solidarity in addressing contemporary challenges. He noted that the current landscape of challenges and rapid transformations in the world necessitate that national parliaments play advanced roles in promoting stability, supporting development efforts, enhancing South-South cooperation, and defending the interests of their citizens in international parliamentary spaces.

In a reciprocating gesture, Gafar Suleiman reaffirmed Malawi's steadfast commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Morocco. He praised the historical depth of these diplomatic ties, which signify the resilience of the friendship and cooperation between the two nations. Furthermore, he acknowledged Morocco’s leadership in Africa, particularly in enhancing parliamentary cooperation, and underscored its pivotal role in supporting African parliamentary work and improving its mechanisms.
