Morocco Reports Death Toll Amid Migrant Surge to Ceuta
In a recent development, Morocco's interior ministry revealed that 11 individuals tragically lost their lives while attempting to reach Spain's North African exclave of Ceuta. This announcement comes alongside a significant diplomatic contention regarding migration policies within the European Union, as Spain reported a much higher death toll of at least 72. Between Wednesday and Friday, tens of thousands of migrants made desperate attempts to cross into Ceuta, prompting an urgent response from both Moroccan and Spanish authorities. Rachid El Khalfi, the spokesperson for Morocco's interior ministry, indicated that out of the 11 fatalities, 10 individuals drowned, while one fell from a precarious rocky area. The ministry is currently collaborating with Spanish officials to verify the death toll and identify the deceased individuals found on Spanish soil.
Role of Social Media in Migration Trends
Morocco has attributed the sudden influx of migrants to the "malicious exploitation" of social media platforms, which they argue disseminated misleading information that fueled the surge. This situation was exacerbated by recent misinterpretations of legal provisions, particularly a Spanish Supreme Court ruling from July 8, which stated that migrants arriving by sea should not be returned as swiftly as those entering through land borders. The ministry reported that around 40,000 individuals attempted to cross into Ceuta illegally during this period.
Additionally, there were over 1,135 attempts to illegally enter the Spanish territory of Melilla, although these individuals were immediately returned to Morocco. While Spanish authorities claim that more than 60,000 migrants successfully entered Ceuta, most have since been repatriated to Morocco. The Moroccan Association for Human Rights has expressed concern over the situation, estimating that nearly 130 individuals are presumed missing, with an official investigation launched into the circumstances surrounding these tragic events.
