Meknès Secures Funding for a Grand Sports Complex
The Fès-Meknès Regional Council has recently approved the construction of a significant sports complex with an estimated budget of 600 million dirhams. This ambitious project is part of the preparations for the 2030 World Cup, where the region anticipates hosting several national teams. The local elected officials convened on June 10 to give the green light for the construction of the Grand Stadium of Meknès, which is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing the city’s appeal as a host for international events. Abdelouahed El Ansari, the president of the regional council, has emphasized the project’s potential to provide substantial added value to the local economy and tourism.
Financial Collaboration and Broader Development Initiatives
The financial structure of this project involves various public stakeholders, with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) contributing half of the total budget—300 million dirhams—while overseeing the overall management of the construction alongside the National Agency for Public Equipment. The Ministry of Sports will supplement the funding with an additional 150 million dirhams, with further financial support coming from regional authorities and surrounding municipalities to ensure the project’s completion. Beyond this monumental sports arena, the extraordinary session of the council has also resulted in the approval of eight other development agreements. These initiatives include the establishment of a 1,000-bed prison in Sefrou for 120 million dirhams, the expansion of logistical and artisanal infrastructures, and improvements to rural road networks. Furthermore, part of the budget will be allocated to increase the air quality monitoring network from nine to fifteen stations by the end of the decade.
