Major Developments in Water Supply for Rural Areas

In a significant stride towards enhancing water supply across rural areas, the Marrakech-Safi Regional Council, under the leadership of Samir Koudar, has announced the successful completion of two major dams and is gearing up for an ambitious program set for 2026. This initiative aims to ensure sustainable access to drinking water and irrigation for various villages and communities within the region.

A recent report from the regional project implementation agency highlighted that the construction of the "Lekraekra" dam in the Youssoufia province, which has a capacity of 4.3 million cubic meters, and the "Lekraroua" dam in the Rahamna province, with a capacity of 1.2 million cubic meters, has reached complete fruition at 100%. Additionally, work on the "Bouhouta" dam in Youssoufia, which can hold up to 0.89 million cubic meters, is progressing well, with an 80% completion rate.

In terms of rural water supply, the council has mobilized new resources through the preparation of an amended annex agreement, currently being coordinated with local authorities. The overall cost of this agreement is estimated at 552.5 million dirhams, aiming to serve 27 centers and 254 villages. The agency will fund and execute projects amounting to 300.57 million dirhams, while the regional multi-service company will handle the remaining portion with a budget of 251.93 million dirhams, covering the second phase of the project.

Furthermore, the report mentioned the introduction of 33 new projects earmarked for the region under the 2026 program. A budget of 100 million dirhams has been allocated, with an estimated total cost of 93.8 million dirhams for these projects, which are designed to enhance water supply services for 95 villages across various provinces in the region. This comprehensive investment strategy reflects a robust commitment to improving essential services in rural areas and fostering sustainable development within the Marrakech-Safi region.
