Marrakech Parliamentary Forum Expresses Solidarity with Gulf Nations and Welcomes US-Iran Ceasefire Agreement

The Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly has officially expressed its solidarity with the Gulf nations that are members of the assembly, particularly in light of the attacks they have faced from Iran. This announcement came at the conclusion of the fourth session of the Marrakech Economic Parliamentary Forum, which took place on June 19 and 20. The assembly highlighted the potential geo-economic repercussions of any disruptions that could affect the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for global oil supply.

In the recommendations released after the forum, participants conveyed their deep support for all Gulf member states of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly that have been subjected to Iranian aggression. They emphasized the long-term geo-economic implications that could arise from any closure of the Strait of Hormuz, urging for a stable and secure maritime environment.

Moreover, the assembly welcomed the announcement of an agreement between the United States and Iran to establish an immediate and lasting ceasefire, along with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a framework for further negotiations. This development was seen as a crucial step towards restoring stability in the region.

The forum, held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, also addressed pressing economic and environmental challenges currently facing both the Mediterranean and Gulf regions. It witnessed participation from over 450 delegates representing national parliamentary delegations, invited states, government officials, experts, and representatives from international organizations, private sector stakeholders, and civil society, all coming together to discuss collaborative solutions.

Participants strongly advocated for enhancing economic and trade cooperation and supporting regional stability amidst the shifting geopolitical landscape that impacts supply chains, energy resources, and regional economies. The recommendations also included the proposal to create a coordinated framework to explore the establishment of a Mediterranean Development Bank, inspired by models from the G7, G20, and Deauville Partnership, with the aim of financing transnational transformations.
