Strengthening Economic Integration in Africa Through Transportation Infrastructure

Importance of Transportation Infrastructure in Economic Growth

During the inaugural session of the fourth parliamentary economic forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf region held in Marrakech on June 19, 2026, Abdel Samad Guioh, the Minister of Transport and Logistics, emphasized the critical role that modern and integrated transportation networks play in fostering free trade within the African continent. He stated that the development of efficient transportation systems is essential for facilitating trade and economic activities across borders, which is pivotal for achieving effective integration into regional and global value chains. These transportation networks, which encompass air, sea, and land routes, serve as vital enablers in reducing trade costs and enhancing the competitiveness of African businesses.

Guioh highlighted various infrastructural projects initiated by the Kingdom aimed at improving air, sea, and logistical connectivity. He pointed out that these initiatives have had a direct and positive impact on the dynamics of the economy and the overall quality of life for citizens. The ongoing investments in transportation infrastructure are not merely about enhancing connectivity; they are also focused on creating a supportive environment for economic growth and development, ultimately aiming to uplift the living standards across the continent.

Forum's Objectives and Participation

The forum's organization is part of a broader effort to establish a space for parliamentary and economic dialogue among countries in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions. It seeks to enhance discussions on development issues, investment opportunities, and economic transformation, including the integration of artificial intelligence, sustainable job creation, and the implications of climate change on food security. The inaugural session witnessed the participation of several government members, including Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, Younes Sekouri, Minister of Economic Integration and Employment, Naima Ben Yahiya, Minister of Solidarity and Social Integration, Karim Zidan, Minister Delegate for Investment and Public Policy Evaluation, and Omar Hajira, Minister of Foreign Trade, alongside parliamentarians and economic stakeholders. The gathering underscored the collective commitment to fostering economic collaboration and addressing the challenges facing the region.
