Mark Bowman Visits Casablanca Port to Oversee Major Infrastructure Project

Mark Bowman's Visit to Casablanca Port Highlights Infrastructure Development

On June 24, 2026, Mark Bowman, the Vice President for Policy and Partnerships at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), visited the Marsa Maroc multi-purpose terminal at the Casablanca port. This visit marks a significant milestone in the ongoing project aimed at deepening the port's quays, a crucial initiative financed by the EBRD. The project is designed to enhance the operational capacity of the terminal, enabling it to accommodate larger vessels and improve overall efficiency.

During his visit, Bowman engaged in discussions with Tarik El Aroussi, the General Director of Marsa Maroc, focusing on the advancements made in the project which is backed by a loan of 690 million dirhams from the EBRD. They reviewed the initial outcomes observed since parts of the new infrastructure became operational. Notably, the project has already facilitated the reception of Panamax vessels with a capacity of 60,000 tons, marking a significant achievement for the Casablanca port, which had not previously been equipped to handle such large ships.

This development signifies a transformation in the operational conditions at the terminal, which has now upgraded its capacity to handle larger vessels. The first phase of the project has opened new operational configurations for activities conducted at this vital infrastructure, paving the way for enhanced service delivery and competitiveness in Morocco's port sector. The visit by Bowman not only underscores the technical oversight of the project but also reaffirms the institutional commitment between Marsa Maroc and the EBRD to modernize Moroccan port infrastructure and bolster its competitiveness in the region.
